Description
Brothers Otho (1824- ) and Solon (1825- ) Chase of Turner.
Solon Chase was notable for supporting the Greenback party from 1873 to 1880. He was famous for "Them Steers," which he used as an illustration in his campaign for the Greenback philosophy.
Solon told a memorable story about "The Cape Cod pot."
“You see, “ said Solon, “my father’s mother was a Cape Cod Indian girl, and when she married my grandfather they moved to Maine, coming to the next town of Buckfield just over that mountain.
“When they started housekeeping they were so poor that all the kitchen utensils my grandmother had was a pot they brought with them on a sled from Cape Cod. My grandmother kept telling my grandfather that he must buy her some more kitchen ware but he would always reply, ‘Haven’t you got the Cape Cod pot?’
"Finally she got out of patience hearing that, got her Indian blood up and she rose up without a word and took the pot and set it bottom up on the chopping block and smashed it with the axe into a thousand pieces.”
As the story went, the husband went out and bought a whole load of kitchen furniture, and there was never any lack of household necessaries after that.
