First National Bank of Bath postcard, ca. 1913

Description

The First National Bank of Bath in the Lincoln Block on Front and Centre streets around 1913. The smaller building to the right is the Adams Block, occupied by John McCarty's novelty and dry goods store.

The Lincoln Block was constructed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Francis H. Fassett. Notable features include the hipped roof, the decorative metal cresting at the roof ridge, and the pilasters banded by blocks of contrasting stone, pierced by recessed panels, and topped by a quatrefoil ornament. Fassett, a native of Bath, returned to his home town after living in Portland to design the Church Block, the Lincoln Block, the Adams Block, the Hyde Block, Sagadahoc County Courthouse, and the Parish Hall to Winter Street Church.

This postcard was made from was a black and white photograph that was hand-colored and then translated to a lithograph for printing purposes. It was sent to Mr. Harold S. Knowles in Greene, Maine by his sister Ella, thanking Harold for a previous communication and visit and postmarked Jan 17, 1913.
