Description

This postcard with its toned black and white photograph is not postmarked, but the businesses pictured appear to correspond with businesses in the 1914 Bath city directory. These include John Conley's Bakery at 55 Center and Hubert H. Feero's New Method Laundry in the first floor of the Music Hall at 77 Center Street, the latter appearing to have moved to VIne Street by 1919. The buggies pictured alongside the variety of wooden commercial structures illustrate a community not yet overtaken by the automobile and the dramatic changes it would bring. The text on the back, addressed to Mrs and Mr. P. E. Hilt, describes landmarks on the street. The structure marked with an "x" is where the writer's family lives, "no 1" is the Police Station and City Hall and "no 2" on Front Street is "where Warren works." The writer also notes that their home is opposite the Opera House, a relatively new establishment at this time that had replaced the Alameda Hall. While automobiles are part of the transportation scene, they have been restricted, as the sign on the left indicates, to a sensible 10 mph.
