Description

This pair of metal ice tongs was used to lift blocks of ice. The two pieces of metal are joined by a hinge, which opens and closes the tongs.

Ice production was a cottage industry on Islesboro before the days of refrigeration. Ice was harvested from several ponds on the island. The ice was used locally and shipped to southern ports as well.
