Description
Horace M. Jordan, a Maine native and graduate of Bowdoin College, received an appointment to work as a catalog assistant at the Library of Congress in Washington on Sept. 15, 1897.
The Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress opened in 1897 and Jordan was one of the first wave of workers at the library.
The first separate Library of Congress Building, the Jefferson Building, was suggested by Librarian of Congress Ainsworth Rand Spofford in 1871, authorized in 1886, and completed in 1897. Its doors were opened to the public on November 1, 1897.
