Endurance record effort, San Francisco, 1927

Contributed by Paris Cape Historical Society

Description

Charles Kingsford Smith, before his successful trans-Pacific flight, made several attempts to break the World Endurance record in his plane, The Southern Cross. His failure in all attempts resulted in a breakup of his original Australian crew and loss of funding.

Harry Lyon of Paris Hill, Maine, was later hired to navigate the flight from California to Australia.
