Author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was a member of the "famous" Bowdoin College class of 1824, along with poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, among others.
For a short time, Hawthorne's family had a home in Raymond. This image was originally taken shortly after a bout with malaria in Italy. It was engraved from the original photograph by Schroff.
