J.M. Brown from Folly Island, S.C., 1863

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Capt. John Marshall Brown of Portland wrote to his brother, Philip, from Folly Island, S.C. He reported that his spirits were good but that if he could he would like to be transferred to Gen. John Dix, commander of the Department of the East in New York.

He also talks about wanting to go home -- especially for Thanksgiving. He had not been home in six months.
