Description

Samantha Smith (1972-1985) of Manchester in Yalta where she visited Livadia Palace with a group of fellow campers from a Soviet Union Young Pioneer camp, Artek, at Gursuf in the Crimea on the Black Sea.

Smith visited the Soviet Union at the invitation of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov to whom she had written expressing her interest in peace and her concerns about war.

The palace was the site of the 1945 Yalta Conference, where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin met to redraw the map of Europe at the end of World War II.
