Stripping blubber, Ragged Island, 1927

Description

A group of men from Orr's Island remove blubber from a dead whale using a hook, rope, and pulley.

Capt. William Sylvester (bearded) is holding the pulley of a flensing knife.

Sylvester, a former whaler, assisted with cutting up the carcass. The blubber was sold for paint.
