Description

Nehemiah Shanks and his two brothers, Daniel and William, lived on Little Spruce Island in Washington County, fishing and farming for their entire lives.

The island was owned by a woman in Boston who allowed the family to stay on the island as long as they promised not to cut down the trees.

The image is from an article in Harper's Weekly entitled, "The Queer Folk of the Maine Coast," written by Holman Day.
