Description

Hannah Pierce of Baldwin, trying to operate a farm by herself, found it increasingly difficult to hire farmers or lease her land to farmers.

She wrote to her brother Josiah of Gorham about her winter prospects.

She said she had sold her pigs and sent her cows to a neighbor's for the winter. She wrote, "But I fear the great snows, and long winter, and shall gladly and gratefully avail myself of yours and your wife's kind invitation . . ."
