George W. Butler, Portland, ca. 1898

Description

During the Spanish American War Capt. George W. Butler was in charge of the Maine Signal Corps which flashed Admiral Schley’s Victory to the world. Capt. Butler’s command was the only volunteer signal corps accepted for service in the Spanish American War. He was born about 1864 in Scarborough, Maine and learned the machinist trade as a young man. He died on July 10, 1917 in Massachusetts.
