Description

Much of the ice during a winter ice harvest is stored in an ice warehouse. When the warehouse is full, the Presque Isle Ice Company stacked the ice outside on a field near the warehouse. This ice is covered with sawdust for insulation.

However, some of the ice thaws and the 24 inch by 24 inch by 20 inch cubes stick together. The photo shows two men breaking the blocks apart for use during the summer months.

This ice will eventually be placed in railroad cars to cool potatoes during shipment.
