Description
Charles Quincy Goodhue (1835-1910), a Portland amateur artist, spent the last 20 years of his life sketching Portland as it looked before the fire of 1866.
This drawing depicts the Old Exchange as it appeared in 1845. It was located at the corner of Middle and Exchange Streets. The City of Portland built the Exchange starting in 1835 in hopes of luring the Maine State Legislature back to Portland. It had moved to Augusta in 1827, after being in Portland since Maine became a state in 1820.
