Description
"The northeast corner of Springvale was lined with stores a century ago. The three and one-half story building in the background, left, was Kempton's Clothing Manufactory. Vests, shirts and other articles of clothing were made on the first three floors while the Knights of Pythias occupied the fourth. The other buildings, left to right, were: A. J. Smith, hardware, Edward Holmes, tonic and ginger ale, I. B. Stiles, clothing, Moses Dennett, general store, Mrs. Merrill, millinery and Charles H. Pierce, apothecary. The Odd Fellows occupied the top floor over Pierce. The Kempton factory was gradually destroyed in fires that occurred in 1913, 1967 and 1984. The four buildings, right, were lost in the Springvale fire of April 14, 1905. The other five were destroyed by urban renewal in the early 1970s." - "A Cluster of Maine Villages" by Harland Eastman
