Ammunition magazine, Fort Preble, 1959

Description

The concrete body of an ammunition magazine at Fort Preble in South Portland is exposed when the earthen cover was removed for fill for a building at the Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

The magazine was used during the Civil War and expanded during the Spanish-American War.

At various times the magazines held bagged powder, mortar ammunition for disappearing rifled artillery and 90 mm anti-aircraft shells.
