Description

Josiah Pierce of Flintstown (Baldwin) wrote a poem to his intended bride, Phebe Thompson of Woburn, Massachusetts. Pierce frequently communicated with Thompson, whom he married in March 1787, in poetry.

The text of the poem follows:

Possess'd of Virtue worth and Fame
Hail Lovely Sweet Celestial Dame
Enriche'd by all the Graces Art
Bless'd with a Sentimental Heart
Employ'd to act the Lovers part
The Richest Blessing Sent from Heaven
Happyness wtih you'd be Given
On thy Sweet Bosom Could I Rest
My Soul would be sublimely Bless'd
Possess'd of thee I Can't be Poor
Sure yuour the wealth that I Adore
Only may I have thee for mine
Nothing Below but I'll Resign
Miss Phebe Thompson
