Description
The home of author and arts promoter John Neal at 173-175 State St. in Portland, near Longfellow Square.
Neal had the home built in 1836. He designed the home and its furnishings and bought a quarry in North Yarmouth so he would have a supply of granite for the home.
He originally planned a row of eight houses, but scaled it down to two when investors backed out. Some of those people then invested in the Park Street development.
