Description

The Jedediah Jewett house at 67 Spring St. in Portland, built in 1851. Jedediah Jewett was the 12th mayor of Portland in 1858.

Jewett also served as Collector of Customs for the Port of Portland during the first half of the Civil War. He was the collector during the "Battle of Portland Harbor" when Confederate raiders captured the U.S. revenue cutter, the "Caleb Cushing". Jewett was amongst the group who pursued the Confederates. The raiders eventually surrendered.
