Description

Photograph of the Dennison House on Everett Street in Brunswick, Maine. Col. Andrew Dennison was a shoemaker and not very prosperous. His son, Aaron, established himself as a watchmaker and Aaron's brother, Eliphalet, joined him in Boston. Aaron imported all his jewelry boxes from Europe. Many of them were of poor quality and they were likely to arrive soiled and damaged. Aaron needed boxes for his business and he had an idea. He obtained a supply of pasteboard and glazed paper from the only manufacturer of such products in the country. Aaron asked his father if he would be interested in making jewelry boxes for him. The Colonel, aided by two of his daughters, Jula and Mathilda, cut and pasted the boxes together. This was the beginning of the first American box company established in 1843 called the Dennison Co.
