Description
Postcard view of a yacht at Hamilton Landing on Chebeague Island.
The Chebeague "stone sloopers" built three wharves on the island. The Stone Wharf, or Hamilton Landing as it was known, is still in use today.
The stone sloops worked along the Maine coast transporting granite and stone from quarry sites to railheads for construction in many eastern cities. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries stone slooping gave way to a growing tourist industry on the island.
