Description
Naval seaman John M. Dillingham, serving aboard the U.S. sloop of war Housatonic off Charleston, S.C. writes home to Freeport about his dislike of writing letters and hot weather.
He talks about the blockade and its being quiet for the last few weeks.
Two Confederate deserters came on board and discussed the state of affairs in "Dixie," where things are looking "blue." Several Union gunboats are mentioned, as is an attack on Fort Sumter. The Housatonic's reputation is discussed.
