A Morning View of Blue Hill Village, 1824

Contributed by Jonathan Fisher Memorial, Inc.

Description

This carefully documented painting is considered the first major landscape view of Maine in the early Republic. Reverend Fisher kept careful journal notes documenting the creation of this work, which captures an early summer morning in the seaport village of Blue Hill, where he was a leading figure.

At the top of the Hill can be seen Fisher's meeting house and parsonage, and in the right centerground is the recently constructed Baptist meeting house built in reaction to Fisher's conservative theology.
