Wadsworth-Longfellow house well, Portland, ca. 1935

Contributed by Longfellow Garden Club

Description

The well outside the Wadsworth-Longfellow house in Portland was no longer used when this lantern slide was created in about 1935.

Peleg Wadsworth built the house in 1783 and his granddaughter Anne Longfellow Pierce had running water installed in the kitchen in 1894, seven years before her death.

She donated the house and grounds to the Maine Historical Society so the house could be used as a museum memorializing her brother, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and the society could build its headquarters on the grounds.
