Fire at Hangar #4, Presque Isle Air Base, 1954

Contributed by Presque Isle Air Museum

Description

Presque Isle Air Base Hangar #4 burned in 1954 and fire also damaged the base control tower.

This area later became the site of the Northern Maine Regional Airport terminal.

A member of the Air Force Base Fire Department recalled that crash trucks sprayed heavy streams of water on the tower, which saved it. The nearby fire hydrants were frozen and water came from hydrants about a quarter mile away.

The Crash Station, attached to the hangar, was destroyed.
