Description
This postcard is of a church that General Henry Knox helped build in Thomaston in 1796, after he retired as Secretary of War and moved his family to Thomaston.
Knox purchased the glass for the windows, the Paul Revere bell for the belfry and the large Bible for the pulpit. The church served a few different denominations before being turned over to a local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Efforts to raise the money to restore the building were unsuccessful, and the structure was razed in the late 1960s.
The postmark on the reverse of the postcard is dated 1906.
