Admiral Henry Knox Thatcher, ca. 1850

Contributed by The General Henry Knox Museum

Description

This engraving shows Admiral Henry Knox Thatcher, grandson of Henry Knox, in his prime. He was born May 26, 1806 at Montpelier, his grandfather's estate in Thomaston, Maine. Inspired by Knox, Thatcher pursued a military career by joining the navy in 1823 where he obtained the rank of rear admiral a few years before his retirement in 1870. In 1854 when he inherited Montpelier from his mother, Lucy Flucker Knox Thatcher, he felt he could not afford to keep it, so he sold the estate to James Creighton. Montpelier was razed 16 years later to make way for the Knox and Lincoln Railroad. Thatcher died outside of Boston in 1870.
