Description
This fire engine belonged to the Lisbon Falls Fire Department at the turn of the twentieth century. Fire trucks, such as the one pictured here, were built in response to the Great Fire of 1901, an event that reduced the business section of Lisbon Falls to smoldering ashes.
The fire on April 6, 1901 destroyed 31 buildings and left only two stores standing. More than 50 families became homeless, and the total cost of the damage was estimated at $200,000.
