Description
Samuel Wormwood of Alfred built this house on North Street in Houlton in 1813 for Aaron Putnam. It was the oldest frame house still standing north of Old Town as of 2007.
It was used at various times as a private home, an inn and business offices. Court was also held there before the courthouse was built and there were cells for prisoners in the basement.
The house stayed in the Putnam family for many years and became known as the home of Black Hawk Putnam, a Civil War veteran and faithful member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
