Description

This sketch of the blacksmith shop on Brattle Street was drawn by H.W. Longfellow in 1840. He passed this shop every day on his way to Harvard College and based his poem "The Village Blacksmith" on it. Below the image he wrote:

"Under a spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands;"
