Description
The first fire lookout tower on 1,069-foot Schoodic Mountain was constructed of wood in 1914.
In 1920 the Maine Forestry District replaced it with a 24-foot-high steel tower, according to Austin H. Wilkins, "Ten Million Acres of Timber" (1928).
Maine was one of the first states in the nation to create a system of watchtowers in the wilderness. From 1905 to 1973 more than 100 lookouts of various designs were manned by watchmen.
