Measuring wheel, Fort Kent, ca. 1900

Description

Measuring wheels are used by surveyors to roughly measure a distance by rolling the wheel along the ground and counting the number of revolutions.

To calculate the distance, the number of revolutions is multiplied by the circumference of the wheel; in this example, 2 feet.
