Bark Spud, ca. 1650

An essential component in the tool kit of the early settlers of the Davistown Plantation or elsewhere.

Other essential tools were the axe, adze, frame saw and bowie knife.

Size: 10 1/4" to the end of the socket.

A bark spud (also called a peeling iron) was used to separate the bark from the wood after a tree had been girdled and sliced with a hatchet.
