Baseball Game, Oxford County Fair, 1921

Contributed by Norway Historical Society

Description

Baseball game between the Twin Towns and the Sanford, Maine, team, held at the Oxford County Fair Grounds at Norway/Paris, 30 August 1921. (The Twin Towns won, 2 to 0.) The Twin Towns was comprised of players from the towns of Norway and Paris, the 2 towns, however, being intensely competitive at the school sports level. High school baseball and football matches between the 2 towns were regularly held on these same unkempt playing fields situated in the infield of the racetrack. The photo provides a visual historical record of period dress, and gives an indication of the wide spread and ready use of the automobile even in the rural areas of the state by the early 1920s. The fair grounds are no longer in existence, having been taken in 1956 to provide currently the site for SAD 17 Oxford Hills Cooperative High School, and in fact, practice fields for the high school are located in about the same area today.
