Description

A member of the R. Cutler Libby family stands in front of a large snowdrift on Morning Street in Portland following the storm of January 31 and February 1, 1898.

The Portland Evening Express reported that houses on Vesper and Morning streets on Munjoy Hill "rocked" from the high winds that accompanied the storm.

The wind caused drifting so that some places had no snow and others had huge piles of snow.

Munjoy Hill seemed particularly hard hit. Some residents could not enter or exit their homes because of the snow piled against doors, driven by gale-force winds.
