Smith trial jurors, Bucksport, 1877

Description

Edward M. Smith was tried for the murder of Melissa A. Thayer of Bucksport in May 1877.

It was believed that the motive for the murder was to steal $850 that Thayer had in her father's house, money from the sale of her deceased husband's farm in Hampden.

On the jury were, Foreman, S.G. Haskell, 51, Deer Isle; I.M. Allen, 71, Sedgwick; M.V. Babbidge, 40, Swan's Island; W.N.Perkins, 58, Penobscot; J.H. Haslam, 49, Waltham; John S. Sargent, 50, Mt. Desert; Robert Grindle, 62, Surry; N.C. Reynolds, 61, Ellsworth; F.C. Moon, 40, Hancock; R.W. Condon, 29, Brooksville; Nathaniel Grindle, 50, Brooklin; and G.A. Devereux, 34, Castine.
