Birchbark canoe on calamity, ca. 1890

Description

This picture was used in Charles West's book, Aroostook Woods. Of it he wrote, "The birch bark canoe was seriously lashed upon the two wheeled calamity towing behind us." (p. 252) In the book he describes driving the Concord wagon and calamity along the roads of Aroostook County at ten miles per hour and frightening the partridge out of the way.

This photograph is part of the (Edward) E. B. White Collection, a collection of photographs by E. B. White and other photographers taken between 1885 and 1920.
