Description
In 1985, photographer Elijah Cobb photographed the "Yellow House," also known as the Laura E. Richards House, a historic home in Gardiner. Built around 1810, it was famous for its connection to the Pulitzer Prize winning author who lived there for the majority of her writing career.
Cobb's mother and aunt, Rosalind Cobb Wiggins and Laura E. Putnam, authored a series of essay-length labels to accompany his portfolio. The side view of front door photograph essay reads:
"One can walk by the wide granite steps of Yellow House, at the corner of School and Dennis Streets, and see just a pleasant nineteenth century building. But there have been generations of very real people living here for many years. About their spirits, L.E.R. wrote:
And do their merry shades slip out,
Hey trol lollie lollie;
And frisk and caper all about,
Hey trol lollie lee;
Does each one spread a frolic wing
And flutter round like anything;
Hark! listen and you’ll hear them sing,
'Hey trol lollie lee!'"
