John Deere seed potato cutter, Littleton, ca. 1920

Contributed by Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum

Description

The foot-powered John Deere Potato Seed Cutter was intended to cut seed more efficiently than could be done by hand, but in practice, a skilled hand cutter was faster than this mechanized system.

Cutting seed by hand enabled the cutter to make informed decisions on how best to cut a potato to account for each potato's unique shape.
