Photograph of Bill Cohen during 1972 campaign for Congress.

A native of Bangor, graduate of Bowdoin College, and a lawyer, Cohen had been active in politics in Bangor before running as a Republican for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

He won the election and served three terms in the House. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 and served until 1996. He then served as Secretary of State for President Bill Clinton until the end of Clinton's second term.
