Description

Nathan Cleaves was born in Bridgton in 1835 and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1858. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1861 and began practicing law in Portland.

Cleaves was a lifelong Democrat and served two terms in the Maine Legislature. He was also appointed judge of probate, surveyor of port, and served as a director in many financial institutions in Portland.

Cleaves was an active member of many fraternal organizations, including the Masons and the Knights of Pythias. He died in 1892 of Bright's disease.
