Description

"A closer look at the Portland Company complex shows all the freight cares that passed by the company complex each day c. 1938, when this photograph was taken. Also passenger trains passed through the property, going into the city of Portland. The buildings of the Portland Company shops evolved over the 136-year life of the company, as about every 20 years there was some major reorganization of the shops and new buildings and additions added." --Fletcher, David H. "The Portland Company 1846-1982." Charleston, S.C.: Arcadia Pub., 2002, 9.
