Restoration of Longfellow Garden, Portland, ca. 1924

Contributed by Longfellow Garden Club

Description

The Longfellow Garden Club formed in 1924 to restore and maintain the gardens surrounding the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland.

The house, built in 1785, was home to the Peleg and Elizabeth Wadsworth and their family, and then to their daughter Zilpah and her husband, Stephen Longfellow, and their family. Their daughter Anne Longfellow Pierce, who was widowed after three years of marriage, lived in the house most of her life and donated it to the Maine Historical Society when she died in 1901.
