Description

The Longfellow Garden Club in 1924 began maintaining the garden that surrounds the Wadsworth-Longfellow house on Congress Street in Portland.

The house, built by Peleg Wadsworth in 1785, was the childhood home of his grandson, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Gladys Pratt of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City hand painting lantern slides of the garden for lectures given by the Longfellow Garden Club.
