Description
Architecture commission for Adam P. Leighton at Corner of Pine and State Streets in Portland, ME, 1915–1917. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens and John Howard Stevens Architects. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.
Possibly commissioned for Adam Phillips Leighton, Jr, MD. During the World War he enlisted as a lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States Navy, and in 1917 and 1918, while holding that position, rendered patriotic civic service by sitting in the deliberations of the Portland City Council as Alderman; he later became a member of the Common Council and was elected to the presidency of it. In business circles he was a director of the Chapman National Bank and the Cumberland County Loan & Building Association. Dr. Leighton's Maternity Hospital at 109 Emery Street, was established in 1913, the first in the state.
