Common Ground Country Fair t-shirt, 1996

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

The Common Ground Country Fair is held annually in Maine by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA). Formed in 1971, MOFGA is the oldest and largest state organic organization in the country. The first organic agricultural fair of its kind, the Common Ground Country Fair was first held at the Litchfield Fairgrounds in 1977, accommodating about 10,000 people. By 1981, the Fair had outgrown Litchfield, so MOFGA began renting the Windsor Fairgrounds, where the fair going crowd eventually grew to more than 50,000.

In 1996, MOFGA purchased more than 200 acres of fields and forest in Unity, the permanent home of MOFAG and the fair since September 25, 1998. Each year a contest is held to design the fair image. Artist Fran Godine created this graphic design of a mule team for the 1996 fair.
