Simon Willard Hepplewhite tall case clock, ca. 1820


This clock likely belonged to John Perkins (1778-1849) and/or Joshua Newton Perkins, Sr. (-1847) of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada and Norwich, CT. Passed to Joshua's son, Rev. Joshua Newton Perkins, Jr. (1840-1915) of Norwich and New York CIty, then to Rev. Perkins's daughter, Elizabeth Bishop Perkins (1869-1952) of New York City and York, summer resident.

Mahogany case with cross banded inlay on door and base. White pine backing. Brass ball finials, plinths, capitals and inlayed stringing on quarter of waist and hood. Hand painted decoration. Sheet metal rocking ship in cartouche. Corner columns on face and central section with brass base and partial brass fluting. White enamel face of clock with Roman numerals. Face of English manufacture, signed in script "Simon Willard" and "1583". Original Willard label and operating instructions pasted on inner waist door.
