Pejepscot Company Records, Volume 9, 1797

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Volume 9 of the Pejepscot Proprietors Records was given to John McKeen by Stephen Longfellow in 1827. Presumably, the volume was deposited in the Maine Historical Society archives along with the rest of the Pejepscot Proprietors records that McKeen had amassed. Stephen Longfellow was a lawyer, and the father of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

This volume is a transcript of a 1797 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court proceeding and outlines the Proprietors' title and legal claim in full. The transcript includes testimonies and depositions relating to company lands, as well as a request to hold court proceedings in Boston, as opposed to Lincoln County, where proprietor Josiah Little felt that the company would get an unjust decision by a jury.

This volume is part of a larger archival collection (Coll. 61), which is completely digitized. To search the entire collection visit our Beyond Borders search page.
