Pejepscot Company Records, Volume 4, 1627-1866

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Volume 4 of the Pejepscot Proprietors Papers is a compiled assortment of records created by, and in relation to, Pejepscot company activities during much of its existence. These records include deeds, receipts, accounts of lots, lists of inhabitants, depositions, correspondence, maps, powers of attorney, and advertisements. The volume also includes material about the Kennebec Proprietors, Bowdoin College, and incorporation records of the towns of Topsham and Bowdoinham.

This compilation of records was most likely assembled by John McKeen, historian and founding member of the Maine Historical Society. Included within the volume is a small ledger entitled “Scraps of early records and remembrances which have been preserved from time to time by John McKeen, July 1, 1853.” McKeen died in 1861 and transferred the Pejepscot Proprietors Collection to the society as part of his estate. McKeen was given the records by his Bowdoin College Classmate, Josiah Little, son of the last clerk of the company, Josiah Little and grandson of Moses Little, an early surveyor and proprietor.

This volume is part of a larger archival collection (Coll. 61), which is completely digitized. To search the entire collection visit our Beyond Borders search page.
